Obviously a rhetorical question: the cemetery is for the living and not the dead.
All families have ties to some distant cemetery where their ancestors are buried. It is only natural to think that maybe that is where one should go to continue the tradition and be with one’s ancestors. However, in recent generations many families have moved to Louisville from ‘down in the country’ seeking work, settled here for years, raised their families here, and often now, have grandchildren here too. Home is now here. The country home of old is a thing of prior generations.
When one passes away and is buried, it is one’s family and friends that need a place to come, visit, remember, grieve and begin the recovery process. It is better to be buried at a place of convenience for those still living that care for you, than to go to some distant place where it is inconvenient to come.
At Brookland Cemetery we hear from many families that they have reached the same decision. “We have a spot in the country where we were raised, but our family is now here, we want to be buried here”, they say. We understand. That is the right decision for those that you love left behind to mourn your passing.
