No. There is no law that requires a person to be embalmed. In fact, some religions preclude the process. The trade off is that the body is typically buried the same day of death in order to preclude its deterioration in public viewing.
Direct cremation is another burial means that avoids embalming. In direct cremation a person is taken straight to the crematory and the body converted to ashes. There is no need for embalming and attempt to preserve the body if the body is immediately cremated.
Whether a family chooses same day burial or direct cremation, we encourage families to have memorial services whereby family and friends can come together, share their grieving and celebrate the life of the lost loved one, in absence of its otherwise embalmed body.
